Independent woman :: Single ladies :: At last

It has been a troubling week to say the least. Lotsa stuff happened in the past four days. At some points the suspense was near breaking point, at other times the disappointment and unhappy stuff seemed too much to bear. But I promised myself and someone to not dwell too much on that, much less blog or talk about it on a public platform. After some pondering and self struggle, I decided to not partake in the gossip or lower myself to his/her/their level. As long as my conscience is clear and I did not do anything wrong or against my principles, I should not let others put me down. Therefore I shall leave the gossips be and move on with the more important stuff in my life, like important relationships and important ppl who have been there for me in the past couple of days.

BFF C and I were discussing a couple of songs which embodied our values and beliefs, ok ok, I am refering to gal power songs. Ha. BFF S had mentioned that maybe guys want gals who are needy and clingy and not the Independent Woman (aka us). I think that while this might be a generalisation, this might also be true to some extent. But in the first place, to what extent are we talking about being needy, clingy or even independent? I'm no feminist and I'm not ashamed to say that there should be some measure of neediness in a relationship - otherwise why be in a relationship when you are better off being Single Ladies? Friendship is much less complicated than a relationship as well. But I guess in the end it's really about the At Last part of the relationship which we look forward to, to find that special someone in the end who will be that "dream (we) can speak to".

P.s: I like the vid for At Last posted below, Beyonce singing while the Michelle and Barack Obama danced at the Inaugural Ball! :)

Happy Lunar New Year to one and all in advance! :)

(Verse 1)

Up in the club (club), we just broke up (up)
I'm doing my own little thing
You decided to dip (dip), but now you want to trip (trip)
Cause another brother noticed me
I'm up on him (him), he up on me (me)
Don't pay him any attention
Cause I cried my tears (tears), for three good years (years)
You can't be mad at me

[Chorus]
Cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
Don't be mad once you see that *he* want it
If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it

(2x) Wuh Uh Oh Uh Uh Oh Uh Oh Oh Uh Uh Oh

Don't be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it

(Verse 2)

I got gloss on my lips (lips), a man on my hips (hips)
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
Acting up (up), drink in my cup (cup)
I can care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
Don't pay him any attention
Cause you had your turn (turn)
But now you gon' learn
What it really feels like to Miss Bee

(Chorus)
Cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it

(Bridge)

Don't treat me to these things of this world
I'm not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Here's a man that makes me then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I'm the one you own
If you don't, you'll be alone
And like a ghost, I'll be gone

Wuh uh oh

At last - Beyoncé
At last, my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
Oh, yeah, at last
The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clovers
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to rest my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
Oh, yeah when you smile, you smile
Oh, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine

The first, the last, my everything

A treat for us Ally McBeal fans. Or those of us who used to catch the series. I was a fan when it was on the telly in the late 90s. Became a fan of Calista Flockhart and some of the cast on the show. What's there not to like? Neuroticism... imaginary dancing babies... unisex bathrooms... and the best... John Cage's song. And the dance which came along with it... legendary! The show mainly focused on the romantic and personal lives of the main characters, often using legal proceedings as plot devices to contrast or reinforce a character's drama. Case of life imitating art? :p The show became such a hit that quotes from the show became known as McBealisms. This show accompanied me through some tumultuous years, like how I remember watching the breaking news on the 9-11 twin towers in the middle of an episode. This show also propelled Josh Groban to fame. He guest starred twice and wowed audiences with his amazing vocals. Good stuff.

It's amazing how some friends tend to be telepathic. After some communication silence due to busy schedules, I met up with BFF C and received smses asking me how I was from friends whom I've not heard in the past week. Them dropping a line at the same time on the same day was a heartwarming coincidence. Friendship was also a recurring theme in Ally McBeal as well, as they work together and unwind together at a bar below their office.

You're the First, the Last, my Everything was John Cage's song, one of the most interesting characters in the show. Brilliant yet reticent, seemingly oxymoronic for a lawyer. The chemistry between him and Ally McBeal in the show was amazing as well. Pity they did not end up together. But that's life ain't it? Sometimes you may not end up with the person who understands you the most. Maybe there's a reason for that. :) My song of the moment these days, never could get the dance moves though! :)

P.s: Ppl, pls stop the insinuations that I'm living the high life now that I'm attached. I still own the bags I carry and the shoes and clothes I wear. On my own money... admittedly not much at all, but still.

Episode of the them dancing in the unisex(hope it works!)

Episode of the colleagues inviting Barry White to perform at John's birthday

You're the First, the Last, My Everything - Barry White

The first, the last, my everything
And the answer to all my dreams
You're my sun, my moon, my guiding star
My kind of wonderful, that's what you are
I know there's only, only one like you
There's no way they could have made two
You're all I'm living for
Your love I'll keep for evermore
You're the first, you're the last, my everything

And with you I've found so many things
A love so new only you could bring
Can't you see it's you
You make me feel this way
You're like a fresh morning dew on a brand new day
I see so many ways that I
Can love you till the day I die
You're my reality, yet I'm lost in a-a-a a dream
You're the first, the last, my everything

I know there's only, only one like you
There's no way they could have made two
Girl you're my reality
But I'm lost in a-a-a a dream
You're the first, you're the last, my everything

I Think I Love You

Re our conversation last night, this is for you. Not sure if you've heard this song before Dear, but I think you know why I selected this song for tonight. Alrighty, 'enuff said. I'll be busy with my thesis stuff this week, but I'll miss ya lots! :)

"I Think I Love You"

(As recorded by the Partridge Family/Bell)
TONY ROMEO

I was sleeping and right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up from something that keeps knocking at
my brain
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed screaming out the words I dread
I think I love you

This morning I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with and so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself and never talk about it
And did not go and shout it when you walked into the room
I think I love you

I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn't that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say that I never felt this way

I don't know what I'm up against
I don't know what it's all about
I got so much to think about

Hey, I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn't that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say I never felt this way

Believe me you really don't have to worry
I only wanna make you happy and if you say "hey go away" I will
But I think better still I'd better stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case let me ask you to your face
Do you think you love me?

I think I love you
I think I love you
(I think I love you)
I think I love you
(I think I love you)
I think I love you
(I think I love you)
I think I love you
(I think I love you).

Retro Chinese Love Song!

Inspired by YY's Note on FB. Dedicated specially to JR: Young man with insight and maturity far beyond our years. Lotsa <3! style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">

Finally after an intense month of tv watching...

The Little Nyonya's ended it's run on Ch8! Honestly I wasn't blown away by the script but I loved the colourful Straits born Chinese costumes, Peranakan utensils and their food!! I've not even heard of some of the dishes! Now I want to learn everything from my grandma, ha. Though she's less than pleased of some of the inaccuracies and depictions of Peranakans featured in the series. :S

Besides the above-mentioned, I also like the soundtrack of the show... so what better way to end this post on this show than posting the two songs I enjoyed in the past month? Though I started out liking the theme song by Olivia Ong, I learnt to appreciate the other sub theme song, by another Singporean singer, 保温 by Bevlyn Khoo 邱意淋. See if you like it as well!

My weekday nights will feel different for the rest of this week, esp when 9pm beckons. :)

2009, New Beginnings, Your Song

2008 left and 2009 came without much celebration or fanfare. Like what some of my friends mentioned, "It's like 2009 did not come!". What is the significance in a date? It's just a mode of reference, like time, after all. But it is what we do during these special dates and times which make such dates and times special, no? Maybe we are mostly caught up in the hub bub of life that we only take note and take stock of our lives when such significant dates draw near.

Honestly, I am not looking forward to 2009 and "Happy 2009" actually sounds perfunctory to me, with the economic recession looming over us and unrest happening all over the world. 2009 will also be a year full of changes and important decisions to be made for me, by me. Ended 2008 with a sense of closure, which brought to mind wat BFF C mentioned at the start of the year "Hey gal, I dun have a good feeling abt 2008." Not to jinx it or anything, but sometimes we just get a feeling about such stuff? Kinda inexplicable but nonetheless there you go.

2008 was a roller coaster year for myself, a year where gains and losses featured prominently in almost every area, more highs than low in my career and I hope to use this to motivate myself in 2009. To reach greater heights. Already I have a couple of projects lined up, both research-wise and the new sem's abt to begin. In other areas, it was crazy times but I managed to pull through, thanks to a great bunch of friends n family. Some friends apologised abt not being there enough for me, but I think that there are some stuff which we have to deal with alone, and what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger. And I've learnt tt I'm stronger than I know. Ha.

Looking ahead, for 2009, I can't say tt I'm looking forward to this year, or even anticipating much. A lot for me will have to be played by ear. While I prayed for a good year for myself and my loved ones on New Year's Day before I turned in, I also asked for courage to face challenges, tenacity, as well as wisdom to know what to pursue and what to let go, as per the conversation S and I had this morning. Ha. And of course, good health, a must for me, something I learnt as well in the past year... no fun being ill during the semester! With this in mind, I deleted all traces of the ex from every aspect of my life (wonders of new media!)- some things shld just remain in the past (though I need help in trying to delete email folders!). No more entertaining nonsense in 2009. Just delete, delete, delete.

However challenging though, life still goes on and I look forward to my daily dose of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, friends who inspire me and my family who supports me. Dr M says tt I need to have more fun and have fun exploring new avenues, will try to see how I can incorporate tt as well... maybe another trip? Ha. Coincidentally, my mum's a gd travel kaki besides my pals, but she's bogged down with lil tykes now. So I might just have to pursue other interests... Maybe more cooking sessions @ M's place? Just had dinner cooked by him last night and it was divine... V can attest to that as well... chicken soup for the soul. Or I can seek alone time with my literary interests and films? Am at the second last volume of the Sandman... riveting read and yesterday and today, I received recommendations to read some more of his books! V recommended Neverwhere, which seems interesting and B mentioned this quote to me from NG himself during our conversation this morning. B has lotsa interesting ideas and he's a really gd photographer. Too bad he requested tt his pics be private but I think that sometimes it's good to restrict circulation of good stuff!

Here's the NG quote he recommended.
"Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build this whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life... You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They do something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should just be friends' or 'how very perceptive' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-out-you-apart pain. I hate love." -- Neil Gaiman

To end on a positive note, YY sent me my horoscope for this month... I am selective abt such things, I only believe the gd stuff! Ha. So I'm glad with my lot for this month. Spot of travelling perhaps? :)

Pris had a song for 2008... I think tt 2008 was a crazy year for me, and too crazy to sum it up in a song. But I've a song to kickstart 2009, partly inspired by YY who got me thinking about Moulin Rouge... again!

*Note: Video begins with some loud moaning from Nicole Kidman's character, you might want to turn ur speakers down first. Ha.*

Your Song - Ewan McGregor
My gift is my song
And this one's for you
And you can tell everybody
That this is your song
It maybe quite simple
But now that it's done
Hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

Sat on the roof
And I kicked off the moss
Well some of the verses well
They got me quite cross
But the sun's been kind
While I wrote this song
It's for people like you that
Keep it turned on

So excuse me for forgetting
But these things I do
You see I've forgotten
If they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is well I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

[Allesandro- opera]

And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple
But now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words

How wonderful life is now you're in the world
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world
